INTRODUCTION: The abuse of alcohol is the greatest problem facing all nations. It alone is responsible for the greatest numbers of deaths, social problems, and medical problems in the United States. The number of deaths in auto accidents caused by alcohol use exceeds deaths caused by wars. This lesson will discuss alcohol, the Bible, and the Christian life.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND DRUNKENNESS

1 THESSALONIANS 5:5-8

INTRODUCTION: This lesson we will explore alcohol and drunkenness.

I. DRUNKENNESS IS SINFUL- CORINTHIANS 5:9-13 6:9-11

  1. like A Trap- Luke 21:34-36

  2. Is not suitable for Good behavior- Romans 13:13

  3. Is a work of the flesh- Gal 5:19-21

II. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND DRUNKENNESS

  A. What is being drunk in the Bible?

Drunk- influenced, impaired by a drug

  1. 1Thes 5:7... "and they that are drunken are drunken in the night."

                                                         3182            3184               2571

Drunken [3184] methuo- to be drunk

Drunken [3182] methusko- to get drunk, an inceptive verb, denotes the beginning of an action.

(Drunkenness is accounted to the beginning of intoxication here)

2. Ephesians 5:18 "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess;"

3182- to get drunk, an inceptive verb, denotes the beginning of an action.

Note: It is evident that sin begins at the very first influence not at the staggering, out of control stage.

B. Comparing the intoxicating effects in Bible times and now.

1. Bible Alcohol % of Alcohol

a. New Wine, fruit of the vine----------------------- 0%

b. Processed wine for storage (30days in pond)-- 0%

c. Extended storage wine (unprocessed) ----------- 0-1%

Note: fermenting yeast died at 1% maximum

d. Strong Drink from dates, grains, fruits ---------- 3-5%

(Forbidden by Law of Moses)

2. Modern drinks- engineered to cause a quick drunk

a. Beer -------------------------------------------------- 3-5%

b. Table Wine ------------------------------------------- 11-20%

c. Hard Liquor (90-150 proof) ---------------------- 45-75%

Note: According to the Calf. DMV and the International Narcotic Research Foundation: the average serving of beer (10-12oz), Table Wine (3-4oz), and 80 proof liquor (1oz) contains the same quantity of alcohol; So the drinker can get the same effect from any. A single serving will cause a BAC of .05 to .07 for a person under 140lbs for an hour and a BAC of .01 to .04 for a person over 140lbs. Legal drunk for a person under 21 is .01BAC.  Bible wine would have required 1/2 gallon of the strongest wine to be ingested at one time to reach this level. One can not honestly compare wine in Bible times with today.

CONCLUSION: One can not drink a single serving of modern alcohol without becoming drunk, and therefore sinning.
